ITIL 5: Everything that changes in the new era of AI and the Cloud

4 de February de 2026

The world of technology service management has taken a definitive turn. If just a few years ago we were adapting to the co-creation of value, today the ITIL 5 Methodology arrives to respond to an unavoidable reality: the massive integration of Artificial Intelligence and the need for ultra-fast service delivery.

ITIL 5: Everything that changes in the new era of AI and the Cloud

1. What is the ITIL 5 Methodology and why is it emerging now?

The ITIL 5 Methodology has been designed to accompany organizations in an environment where digital change is constant and aggressive. While previous versions focused on processes (v3) or value streams and practices (v4), ITIL 5 puts the focus on digital product management as the default way to deliver value.

The purpose is clear: to reduce the friction between development and operation. At a time when 69% of companies suffer from Shadow IT (according to Deloitte), having a framework that unifies the IT vision with the rest of the business is more necessary than ever.

ITIL 4 vs. ITIL 5: What really changes?

The transition from the previous version to the ITIL 5 Methodology is defined as an evolution, not a clean slate. However, there are changes in nomenclature and approach that every IT manager should be aware of:

  • From SVS to ITIL Value System (VS): The Service Value System is now more inclusive, encompassing not only traditional IT services, but any enterprise digital product.

  • Organizational Scope: ITIL 5 is no longer "just for IT". It is designed for roles in Human Resources, Finance or Legal, driving the Enterprise Service Management (ESM) concept.

  • Practical Agility: Immediate adoption is prioritized over the long transformation roadmaps that used to stagnate in the past.

3. The "AI-Native" approach and AI Governance

This is the big headline: ITIL 5 Methodology is native in Artificial Intelligence. It does not simply mention AI as an external tool, but integrates it into the core of the service.

Today, we use AI to categorize tickets, generate knowledge or perform predictive analytics. ITIL 5 introduces the 6C Model (Creation, Curation, Clarification, Cognition, Communication, Coordination) to help companies understand what capabilities they need. But most important is AI Governance: the framework forces us to ask ourselves who is responsible for the results of an algorithm and how we avoid biases, ensuring responsible and safe adoption.

4. PSLM Life Cycle: A Single Product and Service Flow

One of the biggest problems in business today is the disconnect between those who create a product and those who support it. The ITIL 5 Methodology breaks this silo with the Product and Service Lifecycle Model (PSLM).

This model defines 8 connected activities: Discover, Design, Acquire, Build, Transition, Operate, Deliver and Support. By treating development and operation as a single, connected system, "hand-offs" that often slow down the delivery of value to the end customer are eliminated. It is the end of the "this is not my department" excuse.

5. How to implement the ITIL 5 Methodology in your organization

If you are already working with ITIL 4, you don't have to start from scratch. The key to adopting the ITIL 5 Methodology is continuity. Here are three practical steps:

  1. Don't reimplement, update: Keep what works from your current value streams and adjust only the language and friction points.

  2. Map end-to-end flows: Identifies where the value stops between the design of a service and its day-to-day support.

  3. Govern your AI: If you already use automated support agents, apply the ITIL 5 trust principles to ensure quality results.

Conclusion: A step towards Industry 5.0

The ITIL 5 Methodology not only seeks efficiency; it seeks resilience and sustainability, aligning itself with the movement towards Industry 5.0. By putting people and planet at the center, along with technology, ITIL 5 becomes the perfect companion for ITAM strategies that seek a purpose beyond cost savings.
